You may be asking, ‘Who is Claudius? …' We named our shop after Claudius Crozet (1789 - 1864), a French engineer who designed and directed the tunneling through the Blue Ridge Mountains which was an important factor in opening railroad trade to the west. Before emigrating to the United States, Monsieur Crozet served as an engineer for Napoleon. Crozet was a prolific scholar of his time. He wrote the first college mathematics textbook published in America. He taught at West Point, and was one of the co-founders of Virginia Military Institute in nearby Lexington, VA. The little town of Crozet is named after Claudius Crozet, and has grown from a small railroad town that originally served the local peach and apple orchard economy, to becoming an important part of the Virginia wine industry, a flourishing residential community between Charlottesville and Waynesboro Virginia, and an end destination for family and cultural events.
Claudius Design & Consign represents the interests and accomplishments of a community of artisans, many who are local Virginia makers. We like to think that our shop reflects the spirit of our small town's namesake.
